Malay Heritage Centre Publication
This publication was commissioned to commemorate the opening
of the exhibition - Kampong Gelam: Beyond The Port Town - which was held
at the Malay Heritage Centre from November 2015 to April 2016.
For this publication we wanted a contemporary feel. However, it is also important to retain the essence of what Kampong Gelam is all about. As a fishing village and trading post in Singapore, Kampong Gelam, also known as The Emporium and Pride of the East, holds many stories. Thus, the challenge for us was to retain Kampong Gelam’s identity in the publication.
Kampong Gelam has come a long way since its days as a trading post. Although the area has changed to keep up with modern times, the architecture still remains intact and it tells stories of what Kampong Gelam once was.
The one thing that makes the architecture in Kampong Gelam
unique is the motifs that can be found in and around the area;
on the facade and floorings of the buildings. Thus, we decided
to build a visual identity for the publication based on these motifs.
